Advantages and Disadvantages of the Internet

Welcome to Pete’s Blog

This is Pete’s Blog. The aim of this blog is to inform both the youth and elderly of this generation of the wonders of the internet and the negatives in how it affects many people in our modern society. This blog will go in coherent detail about these two points. As a high school student, I am always taking in new information, and over the years I have picked up a thing or two about internet safety. The idea behind this site/my aim is to inform people about how good and how dangerous the internet can be.

The positives of the internet

As stated in the intro, the internet has a wide variety of uses that benefit into making our lives easier and how it such a useful tool to use. 2 key examples of these are: communication. Internet Communication is a Necessity in our modern lives, benefiting too many things that we don’t even realize e.g. Skype . This very point plays a vital role in safe transfer of data and to facilitate the process of sharing information. “A great resource,” many would say as there are stock piles of information all over the internet, it’s a matter of just looking in the right place. a great example of this is Wikipedia as it is a great starting place to gain information and provides a 24 hour easily accessible information which is why many people are switching over to modern technology and why many people have already done so.

Negatives of the Internet

Everything great has its own negatives, the same applies to the internet. 2 Examples are: viruses can easily be transported over the web and people can get isolated from the real world as they get addicted to using it. When we think of a virus, many people believe it to be cold or the flu, well computer viruses are relatively similar and work in the same way. A computer virus is type of malicious software program (“malware”) that, when executed, replicates by reproducing itself (copying its own source code) by infecting other computer programs by modifying them. Infecting computer programs can also include: data files or the “boot” sector of a hard drive. Viruses easily be spread onto computer without the person realising, one way is by opening email attachments that haven’t been filtered or by downloading media or games of bad websites. Internet addiction is commonly referred to an impulse disorder. In some cases, people with this problem may form an emotional attachment to online friends and activities they create on the screen. Internet addiction can further lead on clinical problems, anxiety and depression.
